Do you have a passion for journalism and its role in democracy? Are you looking to put your design skills to work supporting initiatives that elevate journalism and public discourse?

The nonprofit, nonpartisan Poynter Institute, one of the most respected global brands in journalism worldwide, is seeking an experienced designer with a passion for telling powerful visual stories that compel journalists, educators, students, citizens, funders and donors to engage with, participate in and support Poynter’s programs, work and mission.

You will be a key member of our Experience and Events team.

What we’re looking for:

  • Your eye for video storytelling has you seeing visions through to execution.
  • You cover events with documentary-based, story-driven techniques and from time to time, you’ll add in motion graphics and animation if it suits the story’s vibe.
  • You have experience producing videos (typically .60 - 6 minutes in length) with the ability to lead video storytelling, storyboard creation, shooting, editing and producing videos.
  • When you walk into a room (digital or IRL), you understand how to transform it into an engaging experience that moves people to act.
  • You’re a typography geek with an eye for digital storytelling.
  • The challenges presented by mobile and email are just opportunities for smart design in your eyes.
  • The thought of creating visual assets that will inspire the best in the media business — from The New York Times, National Geographic, The Washington Post and TIME Magazine to colleges and universities, local newspapers or NPR — makes you excited to apply for this role.
  • You are eager to collaborate with a team of audience, experience and engagement professionals to create compelling assets and experiences.
  • You have a passion for creative problem solving and design in the digital space, but feel equally at home creating printed materials.
  • You live to create immersive brand interactions and view video storytelling as central to creating a world-class customer experience.
  • You’ll move people to support Poynter’s work through videos like this one and thank them for their donations with videos like this.

Need to have:

  • 3-5 years of video production and multimedia design experience
  • A demonstrated track record of designing immersive, experiential visuals
  • The ability to lead a video project from storyboard arc to shooting/editing/producing and publishing
  • Experience with auto remixing and color correction
  • Advanced skill utilizing Adobe Premiere Pro and supplemental apps like Photoshop, After Effects, InDesign, Illustrator or Audition
  • The ability to excel in fast-paced, deadline driven environments

Nice to have:

  • Journalism or news design experience or an understanding of the media industry
  • Background in experiential or immersive marketing
  • Experience curating compelling guest experiences for both in-person and virtual events

How and where we work:

Poynter’s headquarters are in St. Petersburg, Florida, and we have offices in Washington, D.C. In addition, we teach, report and host events and programs virtually and at multiple locations around the world. Currently, our staff is set up for effective remote work with many of us spending several days per week in the office. Remote, office-based or hybrid work depends on the role and requirements of the job and is at the discretion of the team’s manager. We use Zoom, Google Workplace, Slack, Asana, MailChimp and WordPress to collaborate, teach and publish.

How and where you’ll work in this role:

Candidates must reside in the Tampa Bay, Florida area with the ability to work in-person at Poynter’s campus in downtown St. Petersburg two to three days per week with the balance of the week being remote.

Salary or rate of pay:

(Position title) salary range: $50,000 - $60,000 per year depending on experience
