Assistant/Associate Professor

The Department of Journalism seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in science, technology, data or digital journalism. Academic scholars and journalism practitioners are encouraged to apply. This tenure-track, nine-month position will begin August 2023.
Successful candidates will be expected to develop a strong research or creative works program in one of these areas: science and technology journalism; data journalism; immersive storytelling; artificial intelligence and other innovative approaches to gathering and distributing news and information; audience engagement analytics and applications; network, locative and mobile media mapping.
Teaching duties will include science and technology journalism courses and development of courses and graduate seminars in a variety of areas related to uses and effects of emerging technologies in journalism. In addition to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, our faculty work with master’s students in Journalism’s M.S. program and, together with the departments of Advertising and Media and Cinema Studies, train doctoral students in the College of Media.
The College of Media’s faculty consists of internationally renowned social scientists, media professionals, and humanities scholars and serves 1,300 undergraduate and graduate students (http://media.illinois.edu/). The College is also home to the interdisciplinary Institute of Communications Research.
Minimum Qualifications:
Scholars must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in journalism, communications, media or a related field. Journalism practitioners must hold a master’s degree or equivalent and have amassed an outstanding record of achievement in the profession, demonstrated through national or international awards and/or leadership roles.
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional experience in the news media.
University-level teaching experience.
Publication record and productive research program.
Potential to secure grant funding.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is August 2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
