Do you have a passion for journalism and its role in democracy? Are you looking to put your design skills to work supporting initiatives that elevate journalism and public discourse?
The nonprofit, nonpartisan Poynter Institute, one of the most respected global brands in journalism, is seeking an experienced designer with a passion for telling powerful visual stories that compel journalists, educators, students, citizens, funders and donors to engage with, participate in and support Poynter’s programs, work and mission.
You’re a typography geek with an eye for digital storytelling. The challenges presented by mobile and email are just opportunities for smart design in your eyes. The thought of creating visual assets that will inspire the best in the media business — from The New York Times, National Geographic, The Washington Post and TIME Magazine to colleges and universities, local newspapers or NPR — makes you want to apply for this role. You are eager to collaborate with a team of talented writers, marketing specialists and technologists to create compelling marketing campaigns. You have a passion for creative problem solving and design in the digital space, but feel equally at home creating printed materials.
When in-person gatherings are safe again, you’ll take still photographs of our events and help us expand our library of original photography to use in marketing materials. You’ll collaborate with your team, and sometimes other video creators, to produce promotional and appeal videos.
We’re looking for someone with three to five years of solid multimedia design experience who is interested in expanding their impact in a role where they will be the only designer on a small, nimble and high-performing marketing team. You’ll be evolving one of the most prominent brands in journalism by creating logos and brand identities for Poynter and our family of brands (the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership, the International Fact-Checking Network, MediaWise and PolitiFact), themes and style guides while honoring Poynter’s brand recognition and affection. You have the ability to juggle tight deadlines and multiple priorities. There’s lots of variety from brand to brand and assignment to assignment to keep your creativity stoked.
This position is located at Poynter’s headquarters in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida. Here, you’ll live in a growing, dynamic community along Florida’s pristine Gulf coast and enjoy the added benefit of no state income tax. You’ll work just steps away from the most respected journalism instructors and you’ll be at the fact-checking capital of the world. Preference will be given to local applicants and relocation assistance is not available for this position. We *might* accept a permanently remote staffer for the right person. For now, we’re all working remotely, mostly via Zoom, Google Meet, Gmail, Slack and Asana. When the time is right, we may return to the office in some way, shape or form.
Poynter offers competitive compensation; a solid benefits package; and in addition to regular PTO, a well-deserved two-week paid winter break. Some travel for work may be required once society returns to in-person events. Poynter is a nonprofit, mission-driven organization.
Please email your resume with a cover letter, design samples/portfolio and salary requirements to
