MediaWise, a groundbreaking digital media literacy project of the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., is seeking a summer intern who excels at video editing and production, shines across social media platforms, and embraces the importance of rooting out mis- and disinformation. Our ideal intern will be a key member of our fast-paced team as we work quickly to teach people how to find reliable and accurate information about vaccines, COVID-19, politics and other trending social media topics.
If you think facts matter and are always one step ahead of your friends when it comes to the latest social media trends, you’d be a perfect fit to learn from and work with our small but scrappy team of creative journalists and misinformation experts.
We are looking for an intern who works fast and thrives on tight deadlines, lives on social media and has an interest in fact-checking, mobile journalism and digital analytics. This internship is a great fit for someone looking to get newsroom, social media, media literacy teaching or media literacy campaign experience. Candidates interested in content creation for platforms like TikTok and YouTube including on-camera work are especially encouraged to apply.
The internship runs from June 1 to Aug. 31, 2021, though dates are somewhat flexible. A stipend of $600/week will be provided.
This is a remote internship due to coronavirus. Our team excels at virtual communication using tools like Slack, Google meet video calls and other products.
Through this internship, you’ll gain experience:
- Monitoring misinformation trends across social platforms including Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok.
- Pitching, writing and filming video format fact-checks daily.
- Assisting with oversight and administrative duties associated with the MediaWise Teen Fact-Checking Network and MediaWise Campus Correspondents program.
- Researching internal and external research projects.
Please submit a resume and a mobile vertically shot video that explains why you are interested in this internship (bonus for creativity!) to
firstname.lastname@example.org. Please also include in the body of the email links to samples of past social media content creation (this is not mandatory but strongly encouraged).
Deadline to apply: May 1, 2021
Internship begins: June 1, 2021
No phone calls, please.
