Assistant City Editor
The Santa Fe New Mexican, a locally owned and independent newspaper in one of the nation’s most interesting capital cities, is looking for an experienced assistant city editor who can help mentor reporters at all levels, coach ambitious young journalists, spot a good enterprise piece, respond quickly to breaking news and sometimes overhaul B-minus copy into an A-plus story to appeal to a smart, demanding and engaged readership.
The successful candidate will never have a dull moment working with a news staff of about 10 dedicated reporters — some who have been here for decades and others who are talented rookies. The position includes evening and weekend shifts, and you might find yourself doing some writing and reporting of your own.
You’ll work in a diverse, culturally rich and always-sunny arts and food town surrounded by mountain ranges offering opportunities for stellar year-round outdoor recreation.
Solid writing, reporting and editing skills are a must. We’re looking for an insightful self-starter who always has a sharp idea and can help guide a story from start to finish, with an eye on deadline and a willingness to tell stories in nontraditional ways. You’ll be surrounded by busy, productive colleagues who care about good journalism and want to get better. The ability to connect with colleagues and the community.
Job requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and preferably at least 10 years of experience in news at a daily newspaper, including three to five years of editing and management experience.
